Nelson Freitas

Is he a writer, composer, singer, dancer, owner of a label or just a nice guy? Well, Nelson Freitas is all.

The Cape Verdian multi talent, based in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, started his singing career very modest, as one of the singers of Quatro (which became Quatro Plus later on).

In 1997 the compilation cd of 'MOBASS Presents' was released featuring the track, 'Hoje em Dia' (Nowadays), The people at the Mobass label were inspired and Quatro Plus, with the other members being Nilton Ramalho, Edson de Freitas, Nelson Oliveira and Adilson Ben David, went on to release three successful albums. '4-Voz' (Four Voices) in 1998, 'Bem Conche' (Get to Know Us) in 2002 and 'Ultima Viagem' (Last Voyage) in 2005.

The music style they pursued was not really Zouk. It wasn't really Cabo Swing and also not RnB. It was something new, something that became known as Ghettozouk: Zouk love, but with a deeper beat, sexier, with more soul than the traditional party music Zouk and with more spice than Kizomba.

In 2006 Nelson produced 'Estrelas de 2010' released by Miss Jane Records, a label owned by, among others, Nelson and Johnny Ramos. Besides Nelson himself, the cd features songs by new and already established artists like Loony Johnson, Ali Angel and Johnny Ramos.

Although the cd has many Ghettozouk tracks on it, also other musical styles were used, which shows the broader interest of Nelson. Besides working for himself and Miss Jane Records, Nelson wrote beats for other artists, like Kaysha.

Quatro Plus ceased to exist, and Nelson started a solo career. In 2006 he released his first solo album called Magic, with hits like Deeper and You're Beautiful.

But the guy wants more and he spots a very talented 17 year old Portugese singer by the name of Marcia Costa. The Angolan born girl takes the artist name Chelsy Shantel and with the help of Nelson, she is launched into fame with the album Played Out Record (2007).

After Miss Jane Records stopped, Nelson founded his own label called Ghetto Zouk Music. As Magic is sold out flat, he wrote 5 new songs and makes a new cd called 'Best of Nelson Freitas'. Like the gold status of Magic isn't enough, his compilation cd 'Brasil Mix 2008' sells 40.000 copies and thus reached double platinum status. Above that, Nelson was chosen as 'Best Zouk artist 2007' in Portugal.
